Cute Clothes for Cute Kids - in Half the Time!

23 April, 2018

Raise your hand if your kids clothing drawers close all the way. Anyone? If they're anything like mine, they’re sometimes ready to explode, leaving mismatched socks and worn out hoodies all over the floor. (Maybe all that stuff was already there to begin with.) I've definitely wondered more than once why the smallest members of the house seem to have more clothing than any of the adults.

If sorting, washing, and folding your kids laundry seems like a never-ending task, and you'd like to a restart in your household, with a bit more simplicity (at least when it comes to clothes), read on!

Cute clothes for cute kids – in half the time

Dressing your kids can be an art form. Not only do the clothes have to be clean, and weather appropriate, you want them to look good too. Coordinated, but not too matchy-matchy. And it has to be something they're game to wear. The easiest way to do this? Plan and purchase items to build a capsule wardrobe!

A capsule wardrobe is a small, carefully curated selection of seasonal clothing that can be mixed and matched for almost any setting. You may have heard of this concept for adult wardrobes, but it can be adapted to work for kids of all ages. It might sound a little crazy, but it actually makes perfect sense, especially when you consider how quickly they grow out of things. By investing in a few quality pieces, and using them more, you reduce waste, impact on the environment, and save money while you're at it!

And if you think about it, the kiddies have a mind of their own, and tend to stick with their favourites anyway. How many adorable shirts or sweaters do you have hiding in their closets, brand new because they refuse to wear them? Or how many times have you bought something for them to grow into, only to forget about it until they got way too big? Capsule wardrobes help reduce the mental load involved with dressing the kids – a concept most moms are all too familiar with.

The red shirt’s in the wash, but the jeans they go with are at daycare. The green sweater’s at home but she took off her striped trackpants in the baby’s room and he’s sleeping so I can’t get them right now… where are her leggings?? We were supposed to be out the door 5 minutes ago!

Resetting your mindset
A capsule wardrobe could take some adjusting to. It might mean curbing your impulse to pick up the frilly dress on sale, or that awesome dinosaur tee on the clearance rack. This will save you money (all those $10 bargains add up), free up a few drawers for storage, and help you reserve your time and mental energy for things that actually matter.

It's true that owning less clothing may mean you may need to do more laundry.  After all, you won't have 6 spare t-shirts on hand if your little one has a spill on pasta night. But you may also find you really didn't need all those extras in the first place.  Or that you were able to squeeze another wear out of that sweater before tossing it in the wash. The trade-off could be well worth it!  Less work, less organizing…and more time for fun!
